These unique hand made bikes are the result of a collaboration forged on the shores of the Ards peninsula in Northern Ireland with Donard Bikes.

BACKROAD + - Commuter by day, gravel grinder by weekend. For the rider who wants to keep fit and rack up the miles, whether that's during the week on their way to and from work, or at the weekend riding with their club tackling both on and off road miles between coffee stops and stat comparisons.

At the heart of these bikes are the award winning Causeway GR1 chassis paired with a build kit comprising of a 42cm handlebar, paired with an 80mm stem to keep you in a comfortable riding position for hours on end.

MADE BY HAND IN NORTHERN IRELAND

We're proud of our roots, and this limited edition hand made Reynolds 853 steel Causeway frame has been design and lovingly hand crafted in collaboration with Donard Cycles based just 10 minutes away from our workshop right here in Northern Ireland.

This is an extremely rare opportunity to own a bike that has been produced in Northern Ireland, and features all of the award winning geometry and features of our Aluminium Causeway GR1 chassis. 

We have paired the frame with the super rare limited edition GRX LE 2x11 groupset from Shimano providing a timeless and ultra hard wearing polished aluminium finish which pairs perfectly with virtually any colour scheme. 

Not only is the frame produced by hand right here in Northern Ireland, but we have enlisted the skills of long time friends Elite Refinish to offer a variety of custom paint finish options ranging from gloss black right through to anything you can dare to dream up.

Each one of these bikes are built to order, and come with a variety of options once the order has been confirmed.

For a small deposit, you can secure your new bike in the build queue, and then proceed with select paint colour from a variety of standard options, or push the boat out and select a metallic paint from £99 or full custom paint scheme. (Cost to be calculated after initial consultation)

Episode 1

The Story

If you have made it this far, then you probably share our love of all things bicycles, especially the dark art of hand crafting a new frame out of its raw ingredients.

This project started out as a discussion between Owen from Donard.cc and our director Alastair, and quickly started to grow some legs when we got excited about producing a hand made version of our successful Causeway frame, which was designed and tested right here on the shores of Northern Ireland.

Jump forward a few months and we have just finished our first hand made Donard Causeway Collab frame, and the plan now is to add this model into our product range for those discerning gravel enthusiasts looking for a top quality steel (Reynolds and Columbus) gravel bike with attitude.

Episode 2

The Paint Story

In the 2nd episode we travel to the hills of Gilnahirk just above Belfast City to visit Johnny Bradley of Elite Refinish.


Johnny has been a friend of ours for many years and has helped us paint bike frames, helmets and vehicles since our early involvement in the cycle industry over a decade ago.
Elite Refinish were the perfect choice when we were looking to establish a partner to help us finish these limited edition frames and we have grand plans to work with them on many more projects in the future.

For this episode, sit back and enjoy as we bring the frame through shot blasting and frame preparation, through to priming, painting and then finishing off with a silver leaf for the branding which should match perfectly to the Shimano GRX Limited Edition groupsets that will adorn the bikes when they are built.

Episode 3

Final Assembly

In the 3rd and final episode we bring the finished frame into our workshop in Bangor and set about building it ready for launch with some of the finest gravel bike components available.
The drivetrain is the Limited Edition Shimano GRX LE 2x11 Groupset with polished aluminium finish which compliments the silver leaf paint scheme on the frame.
The tried and tested PRO Discover range makes up the cockpit with their 30degree flare handlebars and 80mm stem.
Wheels are the super versatile and robust HUNT 4 Season Disc Gravel X-Wide in 700c paired with a set of WTB Riddler SG2 tyres for maximum traction and speed in every terrain.
